Artist Information

Saxophone – Dave O’Higgins

Described as “…one of the most vigorously compelling tenor players on the UK (Jazz) scene”, Dave is a popular and well known figure on an international level, having recorded 14 albums as leader with various lineups.

He cut his teeth with NYJO, Cleo Laine, Roadside Picnic and Mezzoforte and went on to work with Jim Mullen, Ray Charles, Martin Taylor, Itchy Fingers, Frank Sinatra, Salif Keita, Jimmy Smith, Joe Locke, Kyle Eastwood, Jamie Cullum, Stan Tracey, Matthew Herbert, Chico Chagas and the BBC Big Band to name only a few.

The Guardian recently described Dave as a “dazzling post-bop tenorist with a magnificent range and a dramatic turn of phrase”.

Drums – Sebastiaan de Krom

Dutch born drummer Sebastiaan de Krom graduated cum laude with a dual degree from Berklee College of Music and went on to study a Masters Degree at New England Conservatory.

In 1995 he won the prestigious Buddy Rich Award and from 1997-1999 was the drummer for the renowned Thelonious Monk Institute Jazz Performance program.

Sebastiaan has performed with many international stars including Herbie Hancock, John Scofield, Phil Woods, Dave Holland and Jamie Cullum.

Trumpet/Flugethorn – Martin Shaw

Martin is widely regarded as one of the top jazz soloists in the UK performing in a wide range of settings from big band to quartet, cutting edge jazz to contemporary pop and funk.

Martin has performed trumpet/flugel with many of the UK’s biggest jazz names including Cleo Laine, John Dankworth, Peter King, Dick Morrissey, Tim Garland and the Michel Legrand Jazz Orchestra.

Further afield, his international performing credits include: Sting, Jamiroquai, Natalie Cole, Shirley Bassey, The Brand New Heavies, Jamie Cullum, Gorillaz…

Piano – Tom Cawley

Highly acclaimed, multi award-winning pianist and composer Tom Cawley has been performing and recording with some of the biggest names in jazz for over 10 years when not touring as pianist for Peter Gabriel.

Tom’s credits include: Jack DeJohnette, Charlie Watts, Jane Monheit, Stacey Kent, Yaron Herman, Lage Lund, Tim Garland, Guy Barker, Andrea Bocelli, Gerard Presencer…

Tom’s jazz trio Curios was recently voted ‘Best Band’ in the BBC Jazz Awards. Tom is a regular member of the Ronnie Scott’s All-Stars in London.

Bass – Geoff Gascoyne

Geoff is one of the UK’s most hi-profile bass players as well as a sought-after composer, arranger, producer and musical educator. We commissioned him to create the music for this 3rd edition of SessionBand Jazz.

In a 25 year career he has played with some of the biggest names in music including Georgie Fame, Michel Legrand, Sting, Van Morrison, Bill Bruford, Everything But The Girl, Peter King, Sir Willard White, Mari Wilson, Benny Golson and Jamie Cullum – with whom he was bassist, MD and arranger for 7 years.
